Like a private island with its own helicopter pad and a golf course &#8211; a place off-limits to the public. Unless, you&#8217;re an A-list celebrity&#8230; or an ecosystem restoration volunteer. That\u2019s how I found myself stepping onto this exclusive paradise, not to lounge, but to battle invasive species.&nbsp;<\/em><br>The adventure began with a boat ride to the island, where a bright yellow school bus greeted us at the pier. We traveled across the entire island to reach our worksite &#8211; now that was something special!<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Local media actually did a feature on me as a volunteer &#8211; apparently being the only foreigner (and a Russian at that) made me newsworthy! The timing was ironic &#8211; this was during the height of the Ukraine conflict, so between pulling invasive species, I found myself constantly explaining the nuances of the situation from a different perspective (that Canadian news were not sharing) to curious teammates.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>I&#8217;ve been trying to track down that article but haven&#8217;t had any luck &#8211; if you happen to come across it, let me know! There was a peculiar me wearing a cute blue toque while wrestling with Scotch broom.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>***<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>I learned so much about invasive species on Vancouver Island. What looks beautiful isn\u2019t always harmless in reality. I never would have guessed that a pretty shrub with vivid yellow flowers could be a parasite that displaces native plants. What began as a nostalgic symbol for Captain Grant &#8211; who missed Scotland and introduced the plant to the island &#8211; ultimately became a serious threat to the local ecosystem. What an ironic story!&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Second, I discovered there\u2019s a specific technique for removing invasive species. Scotch broom actually grows back more aggressively if you merely cut the branches. That\u2019s why you must cut the main stem in spring when the plant is most vulnerable.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Finally, I realized how unexpectedly enjoyable invasive species removal can be! Being outdoors with like-minded people, having meaningful conversations while doing important work &#8211; there\u2019s such a fantastic energy. You\u2019re making a real difference, and it leaves you feeling incredibly proud.
