Most importantly, it uncovers the <strong>&#8220;heart of the destination<\/strong>&#8221; &#8211; the unique combination of culture, nature, and authentic local character that makes a place irreplaceable. Based on these findings, I create a development plan to attract meaningful, responsible tourists by diversifying offerings and reducing seasonality. The ultimate aim is to build tourism that amplifies (rather than dilutes) local identity, creates economic benefits, and safeguards what makes the place truly special \u2013 ensuring visitors get genuine experiences while communities retain their character and prosper sustainably.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h4 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><span class=\"ez-toc-section\" id=\"Project\"><\/span><strong>Project<\/strong><span class=\"ez-toc-section-end\"><\/span><\/h4>\n\n\n\n<h5 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><span class=\"ez-toc-section\" id=\"Major_Research_Paper_MRP\"><\/span><strong>Major Research Paper (MRP)<\/strong><span class=\"ez-toc-section-end\"><\/span><\/h5>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>Visitors\u2019 perceptions on the destination image of Sooke before and after arrival<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>I conducted a comprehensive <strong><a href=\"https:\/\/www.royalroads.ca\/news\/rru-tourism-students-passion-project-turned-research-boon-sooke\"><mark style=\"background-color:rgba(0, 0, 0, 0)\" class=\"has-inline-color has-ast-global-color-0-color\"><u>destination audit<\/u><\/mark><\/a><\/strong> with <strong><a href=\"https:\/\/www.facebook.com\/share\/16nK97dny5\/?mibextid=wwXIfr\"><mark style=\"background-color:rgba(0, 0, 0, 0)\" class=\"has-inline-color has-ast-global-color-0-color\"><u>Royal Roads University<\/u><\/mark><\/a><\/strong>&nbsp; &#8211; the Sooke Chamber of Commerce, the Sooke Museum and local tourism experts. The goal was to identify existing assets and gaps in Sooke&#8217;s tourism offerings. My findings were <a href=\"https:\/\/www.royalroads.ca\/news\/rru-tourism-students-passion-project-turned-research-boon-sooke\"><strong><mark style=\"background-color:rgba(0, 0, 0, 0)\" class=\"has-inline-color has-ast-global-color-0-color\"><u>presented<\/u><\/mark><\/strong><\/a>&nbsp; to the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.sookenewsmirror.com\/news\/sooke-can-be-the-town-tourists-drive-too-not-through-study-216377?fbclid=IwQ0xDSwLP-HJleHRuA2FlbQIxMQABHjHFiOVi9cCQ-X8U4i0FDluJCT8Gm8oZLsGiwhc8GHSp5bBxh4cHaAusLIwK_aem_qM5UkETd61l59uqAmFbaIw\"><strong><mark style=\"background-color:rgba(0, 0, 0, 0)\" class=\"has-inline-color has-ast-global-color-0-color\"><u>Mayor of Sooke<\/u><\/mark><\/strong><\/a> and used in <strong><a href=\"https:\/\/www.jeffbateman.ca\/blog\/service-agreements-for-essential-sooke-community-organizations?fbclid=IwQ0xDSwLP-OFleHRuA2FlbQIxMQABHrKFClkq6nXawGLbdYPeLzRn8sC-Ie2pygXAe6U8T3spIsHePqX26YfLegKg_aem_U245384G2Py6Jd54GBGeSg\"><mark style=\"background-color:rgba(0, 0, 0, 0)\" class=\"has-inline-color has-ast-global-color-0-color\"><u>the Destination Development Plan<\/u><\/mark><\/a><\/strong> to help create the town&#8217;s official tourism <strong><a href=\"https:\/\/www.oakbaynews.com\/news\/sooke-can-be-the-town-tourists-drive-too-not-through-study-538629\"><mark style=\"background-color:rgba(0, 0, 0, 0)\" class=\"has-inline-color has-ast-global-color-0-color\"><u>strategy<\/u><\/mark><\/a><\/strong>. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>I am proud to say that the research and me, as a researcher, were featured in local news.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong><a href=\"https:\/\/www.sookenewsmirror.com\/news\/sooke-can-be-the-town-tourists-drive-too-not-through-study-216377?fbclid=IwQ0xDSwLP-HJleHRuA2FlbQIxMQABHjHFiOVi9cCQ-X8U4i0FDluJCT8Gm8oZLsGiwhc8GHSp5bBxh4cHaAusLIwK_aem_qM5UkETd61l59uqAmFbaIw\"><mark style=\"background-color:rgba(0, 0, 0, 0)\" class=\"has-inline-color has-ast-global-color-0-color\"><u>Sooke Mirror News. The town motto, \u2018Where the Rainforest Meets the Sea\u2019, fairly confirms the fortune of its stunning location. But research found out that Sooke\u2019s true soul is its people: their warmth and eagerness to share something special with visitors, whether in hotels, restaurants, or even the local grocery stores.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h4 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><span class=\"ez-toc-section\" id=\"How_to_apply_it\"><\/span><strong>How to apply it?<\/strong><span class=\"ez-toc-section-end\"><\/span><\/h4>\n\n\n\n<p>This people-first spirit isn\u2019t just charming &#8211; it\u2019s Sooke\u2019s competitive edge. When visitors encounter genuine hospitality at every turn they deeply connect with the destination. The pre-visit survey assessed visitors&#8217; knowledge and expectations, while the post-visit survey evaluated how their perceptions changed after experiencing Sooke. Conducted both in-person at tourist locations and digitally (via social media and <strong><a href=\"https:\/\/www.facebook.com\/share\/p\/1E2cxTE5Rz\/?mibextid=wwXIfr\"><mark style=\"background-color:rgba(0, 0, 0, 0)\" class=\"has-inline-color has-ast-global-color-0-color\"><u>QR codes at partner businesses<\/u><\/mark><\/a><\/strong>, this <strong><a href=\"https:\/\/www.facebook.com\/share\/19LMdtUkmz\/?mibextid=wwXIfr\"><mark style=\"background-color:rgba(0, 0, 0, 0)\" class=\"has-inline-color has-ast-global-color-0-color\"><u>method and the findings analysis<\/u><\/mark><\/a><\/strong> provided three key benefits:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ol class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>Revealed mismatches between marketing and actual experience<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Identified which aspects of Sooke most surprised or disappointed visitors<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Offered data-driven insights for improving tourism offerings<\/li>\n<\/ol>\n\n\n\n<h4 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><span class=\"ez-toc-section\" id=\"Recommendations_for_Enhancing_Tourism_in_Sooke\"><\/span><strong>Recommendations for Enhancing Tourism in Sooke<\/strong><span class=\"ez-toc-section-end\"><\/span><\/h4>\n\n\n\n<h5 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><span class=\"ez-toc-section\" id=\"Key_Challenges_Identified\"><\/span><strong>Key Challenges Identified<\/strong><span class=\"ez-toc-section-end\"><\/span><\/h5>\n\n\n\n<ol class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>Limited Scheduled Events \u2013 Few advertised activities to extend visitor stays, despite past successes like &#8220;All Sooke Day.&#8221;<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Entertainment Gaps \u2013 Over-reliance on natural assets without curated experiences (e.g., themed tours, cultural venues).<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Lack of Historic Downtown \u2013 No central walkable hub, the walkable \u201cheart of Sooke\u201d.&nbsp;<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Infrastructure Deficits \u2013 Poor sidewalks, lighting, and public transit limit accessibility, especially for car-free tourists.<\/li>\n<\/ol>\n\n\n\n<h5 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><span class=\"ez-toc-section\" id=\"Strategic_Recommendations\"><\/span><strong>Strategic Recommendations<\/strong><span class=\"ez-toc-section-end\"><\/span><\/h5>\n\n\n\n<ol class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>Community-Led Tourism\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>Engage locals as ambassadors through social media and educational programs.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Develop VFR (Visiting Friends &amp;
