Arrested Clothes and Hose-Washed Boots<\/h2>\n\n\n\n

A messy Starbucks barista and her germaphobic partner clash over laundry, hygiene, and stubborn habits – boots get hosed down, clothes are “arrested,”. How would love survive if two people are so different? Or does the negative attract the positive and thus evolve into something stronger?\u00a0<\/em><\/p>\n<\/div><\/div>\n\n\n\n

I can\u2019t find my clothes. So I ask my one and only at our first sleepover:<\/p>\n\n\n\n

-J, where are the clothes I came home from work in? <\/p>\n\n\n\n

-The ones stained with chocolate, syrup, and the ones you mop the floor in? – He replies.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

-Exactly! At any job – whatever you do, do your best. So where are they? – Yes, I came home all covered with syrup.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

-The ones with caramel and dust stuck to the sleeves? <\/p>\n\n\n\n

– Yes, my love. It\u2019s a part of my job description: making coffee and mopping the floors. Where did you put them?<\/p>\n\n\n\n

-Honey, right here. One load\u2019s in the wash, then I\u2019ll put your work clothes in.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

-Separately? You wash it separately? What\u2019s the point? Don\u2019t you overuse the water?<\/p>\n\n\n\n

-Yeah.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

-But where is it?<\/p>\n\n\n\n

And you know, where that is?<\/p>\n\n\n\n

 By the entrance, on a small bench, my shirt and pants sit in a neat, arrested pile. The shoes – sticky from milk, syrup, and cookie crumbs – weren\u2019t even allowed inside.  <\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n

-Where did you put my shoes?<\/p>\n\n\n\n

-Outside. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

-What if it rains?<\/p>\n\n\n\n

-They\u2019re under the awning. – Firm point.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

– What if bears smell them?<\/p>\n\n\n\n

-I already washed them.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

-How? They weren\u2019t even allowed near the sink. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

– Shoes in the sink? A nightmare! I washed them with the hose. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

With the hose\u2026  It\u2019s our first sleepover. I\u2019m madly in love but a bit concerned. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

-Has anyone ever told you it\u2019s a little annoying\u2026 but still really sweet and caring? – I am smiling.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

-Has anyone ever told you people don\u2019t usually wash shoes in the sink? Normally. – He\u2019s smiling even more. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

Well, I\u2019m not tidy – I\u2019ll eat food off the floor, no problem. Once I even ate something from the trash (that\u2019s a whole other story). And yeah, I\u2019d wash boots in the kitchen sink with the kitchen sponge! Why? Sometimes I don\u2019t even notice it\u2019s the same sponge – too busy with creative stuff. Other times, it\u2019s just: \u201cWhatever! I dragged myself out of bed – I am grateful just for that.”  <\/p>\n\n\n\n

J isn\u2019t exactly “okay” with germs, as the Canadian dialect goes – meaning “not quite ok” as in extremely NOT OK. Almost like Howard Hughes (actually, exactly like Howard Hughes – minus the planes and billions). Hands scrubbed raw sometimes, car seats sterilized after passengers, phone and keys quarantined until Lysol-wiped upon arriving home.  <\/p>\n\n\n\n

-How much energy does that even take from you? Keeping in mind, what\u2019s clean, what\u2019s dirty? Washing, sanitizing, throwing away and washing your hands after that?<\/p>\n\n\n\n

-Not much, I guess. It\u2019s quick, I\u2019m used to it. And it feels good after.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

-Lots of things feel good if you free up time from cleaning. – I\u2019m just supposing. Still – a huge smile. I\u2019m madly in love, I can\u2019t hide it.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

-You\u2019re a bully! – He answers with a smile. I\u2019m waiting for a kiss or a hug. It\u2019s obvious to have a kiss or a hug right at that moment. But he\u2019s hesitating. I\u2019m a bit offended. And it will take me long, very long to understand how cleanliness is important for him. Understand that it\u2019s not be – being rejected, but my clothes that were outside, my hands not being properly washed.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

For someone with OCD, cleanliness is the difference between a peaceful mind and a mental fire alarm blaring 24\/7. Like living with a tiny invisible janitor in your head who screams every time a crumb hits the floor. <\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n

But OCD has another extreme: people who live in absolute chaos of messiness. But me – I\u2019m sort of a \u201cnormal messy\u201d – sometimes just too lazy. Anyway, I can\u2019t help but imagine our future together. Wondering if our love will survive the epic battle. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

We were both born in the Year of the Ox. Both stubborn. Extremely. So our worst enemies? Ourselves – and this innate stubbornness that complicates the simple and blocks new paths.  <\/p>\n\n\n\n

Any change – the one that will be engraved into you – takes such a long time!<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Yeah\u2026 That\u2019s how we live. Well, not live like we live together  – yet – still figuring it out. Stubbornly.  <\/p>","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"
